Previewing 2019 Champions League Final

liverpool-vs-tottenham-hotspurs-uefa-hampions-league-final

The Holy Grail of club football/soccer will be on full display as the UEFA Champions League Final will be played later today. However, it almost feels like this is a Premier League Final (that would be really cool) as the two final European clubs to face off against one another are Liverpool and Tottenham. Premier League squads had used to struggle in the tournament, however, with this type of Final, that reputation has now all, but dissipated. Let’s take a look at each team and how they got here.

Liverpool

After falling apart late in the Premier League season and losing a chance to be crowned champions, Liverpool looks to redeem themselves by winning the biggest club tournament in the world. This will be their ninth Champions League Final appearance and their second consecutive. Liverpool finished second in their group behind Paris Saint-Germain, but went on to knockout Bayern Munich in the Round of 16, Porto in the quarter-finals, and rallied from a deep 0-3 deficit against Barcelona in the semi-finals. The team boasts such great talents as Roberto Firmino, Virgil van Dijk, James Milner, Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane, Daniel Sturridge, Jordan Henderson, and Divock Origi.

Tottenham

The Spurs will be making their first Champions League Final, but hope to make it worth their while. There’s a lot to like here as the team has some incredible players like Harry Kane, Erik Lamela, Victor Wanyama, Dele Alli, Kieran Trippier, Jan Vertonghen, Eric Dier, Hugo Lloris, and Son Heung-min. Tottenham finished second in their group behind Barcelona, but went on to dispatch Borussia Dortmund in the Round of 16, Premier League foe Manchester City in the quarterfinals, and Ajax in the semi-finals.

Predictions

James Rowe: Tottenham. Liverpool is the overwhelming favorites and will be looking to make up for their late season Premier League collapse and avenge their loss in last year’s Champions League Final against Real Madrid. And that’s why I think Tottenham will win it as all the pressure is on Liverpool. Tottenham has all the talent to win this and as the underdogs, the pressure is off. Regardless, it should be a great match.

Previewing 2019 Gallagher Premiership Final

TELEMMGLPICT000198182493-xlarge_trans_NvBQzQNjv4BqNadeZm0KzkFwpSYJhHDpPbQMI5hkDcUBB5qZKQzbZSY

It all comes down to this, the Premiership Final as it’s a rematch from last season. It comes down to the Exeter Chiefs, who look to avenge their loss from last year’s Final, and the Saracens, who look to defend their title. This is looking to be an epic matchup as the two best teams in the Premiership in 2018-19 prepare for what could be a climatic match.

Exeter boasts a very powerful offense as they scored the most tries in the league and are defensively sound as they only allowed the second fewest tries this season. The Chiefs blew away the Northampton Saints in last week’s semi-final 42-12 to make their fourth consecutive appearance in the Final.

The Saracens were a well-rounded side this year as they had the biggest point differential on the table at 204, but they also scored a grand total of 77 tries. With a great offense, they also boast the best defense who only allowed 44 tries, the fewest in the league. The Saracens absolutely hammered Gloucester 44-19 in the semi-final. They also were the European Champions Cup winner which could make for an extremely successful 2018/19 campaign.

Matchup

The two teams split the season series 1-1 with Exeter winning 31-13 on December 22, but the Saracens won the last matchup 38-7 on May 4.

Predictions

James Rowe: Saracens. Exeter might have had the better season according to the points on the table, but the Saracens are a more rounded team and are in better form. Plus I’m sure they will take away a lot from their victory last month. I just hope it’s a good one.

Previewing 2019 Stanley Cup Final

battle-for-the-puck

It all comes down to this, the Stanley Cup Final. Essentially the Holy Grail for hockey fans, but what really will be interesting is the two teams in this series. From the Western Conference it will be the St. Louis Blues who are making a cinderella run for a championship. From the Eastern Conference, it will be the the powerful Boston Bruins who seemed to get better every round after sweeping the Carolina Hurricanes in the Eastern Conference Final. With that being said, let’s take a look at the matchup.

Matchup

The two teams split the season series 1-1.

Predictions

James Rowe: St. Louis. Like the Washington Capitals, the Blues have had a long stretch of not being able to win a championship, but it almost seems like destiny for them. They have been playing the best hockey since January and are on an unbelievable stretch. The Bruins are going to make this a tough series as they both matchup well with their defenses and will be looking for the third Boston sports championship dating back to when the Red Sox won the World Series

Previewing 2019 Gallagher Premiership Playoffs: Semi-Finals

SaravQuins-GalleryImage-1004-1024x576

After a long and grueling season, 22 rounds to be exact, it all now comes down to these final two weeks to determine who is the champion of English rugby as four teams have the chance to win the coveted trophy. The four teams are the Exeter Chiefs, Saracens, Gloucester, and Northampton and each of them have a excellent chance at winning the whole thing. With that being said, let’s take a look at each team.

Exeter Chiefs

The Chiefs finished the season on top of the table, but they will be looking to avenge last year’s loss in the Final. This team was very good in 2018-19 as they are very good offense (scoring the most tries in the Premiership) and lock down defense (allowing only 51 tries, second lowest in the league). They boast such talents as Alex Cuthbert, Santiago Cordero, Ollie Devoto, Henry Slade, Sam Simmonds, and Luke Cowan-Dickie. They blew away the competition this season with 86 points, eight points clear of second place Saracens, but they have lost two of their last four matches and that could be of concern. With a week off, the question will be is can they get back into form.

Saracens

The Saracens finished in second place this season, but they are the defending champions and look to keep their title this season. There are a lot of talented players on this roster such as Jamie George, Titi Lamositele, Mako and Billy Vunipola, Maro Itoje, Schalk Burger, Will Skelton, Owen Farrell, Brad Barritt, Sean Maitland, David Strettle, Alex Goode, and Liam Williams as there are good reasons why they could very well defend their championship with a bunch of players like them on the squad. The Saracens had the biggest point differential in the Premiership with 204 as their offense was phenomenal (77 tries scored), but their defense was the best as they allowed a league low tries with 44.

Gloucester

Gloucester surprisingly had a good season as they finished third in the table with 68 points, having finished seventh the season before, and have a very good chance and making a run to the championship. The team has some good talent here with the likes of Ruan Dreyer, Franco Mostert, Jaco Kriel, Danny Cipriani, Owen Williams, Billy Twelvetrees, Matt Banahan, and Charlie Sharples. With the likes of Johann Ackermann running the club, the future looks bright, but with a chance to win a championship this season, they will be trying very hard to win this time around. However, they haven’t blown the competition away as they seem to have a very balanced team having scored 75 tries, but have allowed 60. They are an interesting team now, but the future is bright for them.

Northampton Saints

It came down to the wire as six squads fought to the bitter end for the final spot in the playoffs, but the Northampton Saints came out of it and clinched the fourth seed. That being said, there is some really good talent on the squad with such players as Dylan Hartley, Ben Franks, Jamie Haskell, Tom Wood, Dan Biggar, and Taqele Naiyaravoro. The head coach Chris Boyd has been a revelation as he brought his coaching success to the club over the offseason, which he even helped the squad win Premiership Rugby Club over the Saracens on March 17. Not quite like Gloucester, there is a similar style of play as they scored 69 tries and allowed only 62. The hope to even winning the championship would be incredible.

Matchups

Exeter Chiefs vs Northampton Saints

The two teams split the season series 1-1, but the two faced off in the final week of the season with Exeter winning.

Predictions:

James Rowe: Exeter. It seems like their form is back and they know what to expect from Northampton, but the collection of talent for the Chiefs is overwhelming compared to Saints.

Saracens vs Gloucester

The two teams split the season series 1-1 with two having last played on February 22 (Gloucester victory).

Predictions:

James Rowe: Saracens. The European Champions Cup winners will look to add more accolades to an already successful campaign, but the first point of business will be defeating Gloucester who has played them close in the two matches this season. Gloucester is a very promising team that has a bright future, but the Saracens has an excellent collection of talent that might even be the best in the entire league.

Eastern Conference Final

Boston Bruins vs Carolina Hurricanes

Boston won two of three games played against one another this season

A “Bunch of Jerks” aka Carolina Hurricanes are making a cinderella run as they defeated division rival and defending champion Washington Capitals in seven grueling games and then went on to sweep division foe New York Islanders for a place in the Eastern Conference Final. Their prize will be against the Boston Bruins who made the Eastern Conference Final after defeating an offensive juggernaut in the Toronto Maple Leafs in seven games and then defeated a suddenly red hot Columbus Blue Jackets to reach the Eastern Conference Final.

Many might take Boston in this series, however, Carolina has shown to not underestimate them as they have won despite the odds. They also seem to be having a lot of fun and are getting into a groove. The Hurricanes are getting hot at the right time.

Offensively, both sides are pretty much even, but the Bruins have an edge with having a lot more postseason experience and their defensive abilities especially with such a trio of Brad Marchand, Patrice Bergeron, and David Pastrnak. That doesn’t mean the Hurricanes have nothing offensively as it has shown with such promising stars in Teuvo Teravainen and Sebastian Aho that they can produce some goals as well. While Boston has the edge, Carolina matches up well.

However, what the Hurricanes do have is more depth on the blue line. Yes Boston is a bit banged up with injuries, but Carolina actually has been stronger here. That could be a crucial part to where this series goes.

However, when it comes goaltending, Boston dominates. They have a proven annual Vezina Trophy candidate in Tuuka Rask who has been arguably the hottest in front of the net this postseason. Carolina has little known Curtis McElhinney, who has been pretty good, but he will be faced with a really tough test in the Bruins offense.

Predictions

James Rowe: Carolina. While Boston is the better team here, are more experienced, and have a hot goalie, I just think the Hurricanes are playing the best form of hockey at the right time. Despite Boston having being tested this postseason, they have dealt with injuries and I think it will catch up to them. This will go seven games, but Carolina is going to continue this cinderella story.

Western Conference Final

San Jose Sharks vs St. Louis Blues

San Jose won two of three games played against one another this season

San Jose was tested in the first two rounds of the playoffs as they went to the seventh game of their series against each of their opponents, first Vegas Golden Knights and second Colorado Avalanche, to get to the Western Conference Final. Now they are hoping they can continue their battles all the way to the Stanley Cup Final. However, they will be facing off against a St. Louis Blues team, who arguably has had the greatest run of success since the start of the calendar year despite seemingly being dead in the water (30-15-5 since January when they were last in the Central Division), as they come to the Western Conference Final after having beaten the Winnipeg Jets in six games in the first round and then going to a seventh game against the Dallas Stars. Both teams have dealt with a lot of disappointment for their fans over the decades, so this will be exciting nonetheless.

San Jose had dealt with a speedy Colorado team last round, but now face off against a physical force in St. Louis, which means that San Jose has the upper hand as they play better in those type of games.

Sharks have an excellent offense as they are incredibly deep and their power play will be one of the keys to their success, plus they were nearly unbeatable on penalty killing. Blues aren’t very strong on special teams, but they are riding on their goalie sensation Jordan Binnington who has been incredible at stopping pucks from getting in the net and he would be the biggest factor for St. Louis to advance, however, he never faced San Jose this season. The one thing the two teams are even on are defense.

Predictions

James: San Jose. I’ve just got this gut feeling that San Jose is just going to win this series in seven games and it will be because it comes down to special teams which St. Louis struggles with.

Previewing 2019 NHL Playoffs Second Round

Eastern Conference

Columbus Blue Jackets vs Boston Bruins

Boston won two of the three games this season.

The Blue Jackets dispatched not only the top seed in the Eastern Conference, but the President’s Trophy winner Tampa Bay Lightning for their first playoff victory in franchise history. The Bruins staved off a very good and very dangerous offense in Toronto, but they aren’t playing great hockey going into this series as injuries have hurt them. One thing to watch will be how the Blue Jackets will play in this series as they have had a week off as they could either benefit from it or not.

Predictions

James Rowe: Columbus. I think the Blue Jackets are playing great hockey at the right time and the Bruins are hurting. It’s a perfect time to strike for Columbus.

Carolina Hurricanes vs New York Islanders

New York won three of the four games played between the two this season

The Hurricanes shockingly defeated the defending champion Washington Capitals in seven games and are out to prove even more so that they deserve to be in the playoffs. Now they are hungry to prove that they are a strong contender for the Cup. The Islanders are in a similar situation as Columbus as they have had a week off after beating the Pittsburgh Penguins. The layoff will also be another big factor coming into this series.

Predictions

James: New York. Islanders have been playing really excellent hockey this year and honestly, I think that despite the layoff, they have a major advantage over Carolina.

Western Conference

St. Louis Blues vs Dallas Stars

Blues won three of four games in the season series.

The two of these teams both upset in their matchups where it feels like it’s two unstoppable forces playing one another. St. Louis came into this series with a lot of momentum as they have seemingly been playing the best hockey out of any team coming into the playoffs. Dallas tight style game play is one of the biggest reasons why they played Winnipeg, a team so many thought would go all the way to the Finals.

Predictions

James: Blues. It’s too hard to see Dallas, playing arguably the team playing the best type of hockey in the playoffs, winning the series. Just as long as Jordan Binnington is minding the net, the Blues are easily taking this series.

San Jose Sharks vs Colorado Avalanche

San Jose won all three games played this season against Colorado.

San Jose won in absolute crazy fashion against the Vegas Golden Knights in the seventh game and came back down from 3-1 in the series. Colorado on the other hand played some great hockey and shocked Calgary as they won four straight games after losing the opening game of the series 4-0. This series could lead to a very interesting confrontation as San Jose just played some grueling games while Colorado has had a few days to recuperate.

Predictions

James: San Jose. While the Avalanche has had some rest, San Jose is a better team and has played more so they are battle tested.

Previewing 2019 Masters Tournament

masters-hero7

This is the ultimate golfing event of the year and undoubtedly the most important tournament in the entire PGA campaign. Winning the Green Jacket is something all golfers envision winning at some point whether it’s as a kid or just starting out their professional careers. There have been some incredible moments whether it’s out of sheer remarkably incredible comebacks or failures, this is one of the most watched sporting events for a reason. Augusta National has had many historical moments, but another could happen this time around. Patrick Reed will look to retain his crown from last year, but this is such an unpredictable and dramatic tournament, anything could happen. With that being said, let’s take a look at the favorites and the dark horses for this tournament.

Favorites

Rory McIlroy

Dustin Johnson

Justin Rose

Rickie Fowler

Jordan Spieth

Tiger Woods

Spieth came close to repeating in 2016, but choked on the final day. However, he always fares well there. McIlroy will be trying to complete the career Grand Slam which would be remarkable. Johnson and Rose are talented players who might be just a few short years away from winning a Green Jacket. Fowler is due to win a major championship, could this be it? And when mentioning favorites, you can never forget Tiger Woods and his accolades.

Dark Horses

Brooks Koepka

Francesco Molinari

HaoTong Li

Vijay Singh

There’s been a lot of talks about these golfers as they all have shown promise of doing big things. The most notable is Singh, but Li, Molinari, and Koepka could be household names very soon. These guys could possibly come out of nowhere and win it like how Danny Willett did it last year.

Others to Watch

Tony Finau

Bryson DeChambeau

Justin Thomas

Jon Rahm

Paul Casey

Jason Day

Hideki Matsuyama

Matt Kuchar

Tommy Fleetwood

Louis Oosthuizen

Bubba Watson

Webb Simpson

Adam Scott

Patrick Reed

Sergio Garcia

Marc Leishman

Xander Schauffele

Henrik Stenson

Phil Mickelson

These are all really good golfers and all could make a legitimate shot at the title, but this is a list meant for seeing what they do. Most of them should at least make it to the final day, but usually it’s a smaller crowd on that day.

Predictions

James Rowe: Rory McIlroy. He’s been playing really well of late and it almost seems like he is destined to win it this year. However, Rickie Fowler will make it really interesting.

Previewing 2019 NHL Playoffs: First Round

cupkiss

It’s that time of the year as the Stanley Cup Playoffs are finally back and many hockey fans will be ecstatic to watch some of the best drama sports can provide (and that’s no joke, every game is outstandingly close). While it’s weird to say this now after all those years of heartbreak, teams will be gunning for the defending champion, Washington Capitals, who look to retain the Stanley Cup. With that being said, let’s preview each team and series.

Eastern Conference

Boston Bruins

Boston is a pretty lethal team with a lot talent up front in the forwards with such players as David Pastrnak, Patrice Bergeron, and Brad Marchand, along with such other top notch players like David Krejci, Marcus Johansson, and Jake DeBrusk. However, they are balanced too with a solid defensive corp in Zdeno Chara, Charlie McAvoy, and Torey Krug. The Bruins also have a great goalie in Tuuka Rask who puts up Vezina Trophy like numbers every year. While there were a lot of injury issues this season for them, they are a pretty well rounded team.

Carolina Hurricanes

In what feels like an eternity, the Hurricanes are back in the playoffs. However, don’t sleep on this squad, they are really talented and dangerous. They got into the playoffs based on their possession style type of play. They have some top tier talent in Sebastian Aho, Jordan Staal, Teuvo Teravainen, Michael Fearland, and the ageless wonder Justin Williams. However, their best player is Dougie Hamilton who has been the key part of their successful run to the playoffs. Goaltending is a big question mark as they don’t have an established goalie. They will have to go with whoever has the hot hand in either Petr Mrazek or Curtis McElhinney.

Columbus Blue Jackets

Columbus limped into the playoffs, but here they are trying to prove that their end of season struggles are thing of the past. That being said, they do boast some talent here as they are primed to make a deep run and could do so. With such players as Cam Atkinson, Artemi Panarin, Pierre Luc-Dubois, Seth Jones, and Josh Anderson leading their offense and defense. They also have a very good goalie in Sergei Bobrovsky. Keep an eye on what they do these playoffs, they could upset.

New York Islanders

The Islanders came out of nowhere and played some great hockey this year. That being said, they could make a deep run in the playoffs and even possibly hoist the Cup up later this June. The team lost their prized star in John Tavares in free agency so many thought New York would struggle, but that would not be the case. Their is some top talent in Matthew Barzal, Anders Lee, Devon Toews, Brock Nelson, and Josh Bailey. The goaltending will likely be netminder Robin Lehner’s job for the postseason, however backup Thomas Greiss can fill in well if things go awry for Lehner.

Pittsburgh Penguins

Not able to pull off a three-peat last year, the Penguins look to win a third Stanley Cup in four years with a deep run this year. Pittsburgh has an abundance of talent in players like Jake Guentzel, Phil Kessel, Kris Letang, and Patric Hornqvist, but also top notch superstars in Evgeni Malkin and possibly the best player in the league in Sidney Crosby. While their offense can compete, the defense is suspect. The goaltending though is solid with youngster Matt Murray in the net, however, if struggles do arise, the Penguins are in a bunch of trouble.

Tampa Bay Lightning

Tampa Bay has been a really good team the last few seasons, but this year, the Lightning were really freaking good. They came close breaking so many records that thinking they are not the favorites to win this year is foolish. Oh, and they won the President’s Trophy.  There team is loaded with talent like Steven Stamkos, Nikita Kucherov, Brayden Point, Victor Hedman, Tyler Johnson, Ondrej Palat, and Cedric Paquette, but this team has many others which makes them deep. This team is stout defensively and pack quite a punch offensively, there is one thing that makes them even more dangerous and that’s their goalie Andrei Vasilevskiy who is probably going to win the Vezina Trophy. This team is just too good.

Toronto Maple Leafs

Well if Tampa Bay have a lot of fire power, then this team is not far behind as they are loaded with young, but great goal scoring talent. After adding John Tavares in the offseason, it just added more offense to an already great one. They are blessed to have such players like Auston Matthews, Mitch Marner, William Nylander, Nazem Kadri, Morgan Rielly, and veteran Patrick Marleau. However, their Achilles Heel is their defense. They allow a lot of goals, so they will need to score more than they allow. Simple concept, but hard to pull off. They do have Frederik Andersen at net, but he is either really good or really bad and they will have to bank on hoping he is really good or else their season ends early.

Washington Capitals

The defending champions come in with their fourth straight Metropolitan Division title, but there is a very good chance they could repeat this year as they are deep and well rounded. This team might have the best chance at beating Tampa Bay in the Eastern Conference Finals, but the Capitals will have to actually make it if that is the case. That being said, they are loaded with talent with players like T.J. Oshie, Brett Connolly, Jakub Vrana, Evgeny Kuznetsov, John Carlson, Andre Burakovsky, and Tom Wilson, but they also boast superstars Nicklas Backstrom and possibly the best goal scorer in the league Alexander Ovechkin. These guys are really good and will be very tough to beat and if their goalie Braden Holtby plays like an absolute beast in the net, it will be tough to even score on them.

Western Conference

Calgary Flames

The Flames came out of nowhere this year and finished first in the Pacific Division, but this team is really good. There is some good talent here in Mark Giodarno and Johnny Gaudreau, however, there is also great players in Elias Lindholm, Sean Monahan, T.J. Brodie, and Mikael Backlund. The concern is their goaltending as Mike Smith was bad this year and backup David Rittich played well, but he’s a backup for a reason. They have to bank on them performing well if they want to win the Stanley Cup.

Colorado Avalanche

With a late push for the playoffs, the Avalanche are back. Colorado has a lot to like as they are young and have some good talent like Nathan MacKinnon, Gabriel Landeskog, Mikko Rantanen, Carl Soderberg, and Tyson Barrie. The Avalanche are on the rise and could become a force in the near future, but there will be a lot of growing pains here for Colorado. However, what gives them hope is Philipp Grubauer in the net as he has been playing really well of late. Their hope is that he can continue that into the playoffs.

Dallas Stars

The Stars are very interesting team as they have some good seasons and then play like a mediocre the next, but they had a great one this year and are back in the playoffs. Dallas has a crop of talent that is fun to watch like Jamie Benn, Tyler Seguin, Alexander Radulov, Mats Zuccarello, and Miro Heiskanen, but their goalie Ben Bishop is sensational has he puts up Vezina Trophy like numbers. This team is sneaky good and could make a first round upset.

Nashville Predators

The Predators are back in the playoffs again and will be looking for some magic this time around again like they did in their Cup finals run a couple years ago. Nashville has a collection of talent that is so good, it could very well win it this year with the likes of Ryan Johansen, Viktor Arvidsson, Filip Forsberg, Roman Josi, P.K. Subban, and Mattias Ekholm leading their squad. Also, with Pekka Rinne in the net, they feel supremely confident about their chances and look to win their first Cup in franchise history.

San Jose Sharks

It seems pretty annual at this point to talk about San Jose in the playoffs as they seemingly make it every season, and for good reason, they are a really good team. With the likes of such talent on the team as Evander Kane, Gustav Nyquist, Joe Thornton, Joe Pavelski, Tomas Hertl, and Erik Karlsson. They also have a solid goalie in Martin Jones, but Jones has struggled this season so the Sharks will hope that he can be back to his best for the playoffs if they want any chance of advancing.

St. Louis Blues

Blues seemed like they were going to have disappointing season as they started the season off badly, but they managed rally off one of the most incredibly impressive run to the playoffs and here they are as the hottest squad going in to the postseason. They’ve got some talent like Vladimir Tarasenko, Ryan O’Reilly, Alex Pietrangelo, Jay Bouwmeester, Carl Gunnarsson, and Brayden Schenn. However, their goaltending has been sensational since Jordan Binnington became the starter as he only lost 5 games en route to making the playoffs. It should be interesting how he handles the playoffs as he is probably the x-factor for the team.

Winnipeg Jets

The Jets have a collection talent that could take Winnipeg all the way to the championship and people should take them seriously. With the likes of Dustin Byfuglien, Mark Scheifele, Patrik Laine, Blake Wheeler, Nikolaj Ehlers, and Kevin Hayes on the team, they are a super dangerous squad to compete with as they should give any side a thorn on their sides. While Connor Hellebuyck has not been at his best, he’s been playing well of late and that could be key for them if they want to beat the juggernauts. They are a fun team to watch and Winnipeg is a team that has all the making for a championship.

Vegas Golden Knights

After a remarkable inaugural season where they played all the way to the Stanley Cup Finals, Vegas is back and they have proven that they are a good team, however, they don’t have the seeding like last year and it will be interesting to see what they do this Stanley Cup Playoffs. There are some talented players like Jonathan Marchessault, Reilly Smith, Cody Eakin, Alex Tuch, Nate Schmidt, and Brayden McNabb, but they also have a great veteran in net with Marc-Andre Fleury who has been a rock in front of the goal. It should be interesting how things turn out this year for them in the playoffs.
